Graciela Castañeda, 61, had an active life in Venezuela when her doctor told her she had retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a rare, inherited eye disease that eventually leads to blindness. “I thought he was crazy when he told me I would go blind,” recalls the native Colombian. “I just thought I needed better glasses.”

Jacqueline Huss, 9, a third grader at David Posnack Hebrew Day School in Plantation, toured the Lighthouse of Broward (LHOB) last year when she was a student at Temple Kol Ami in Plantation. The experience made such an impression on her that when she made a lighthouse diorama for a third grade social studies and science project in January, she decided to donate it to LHOB.
