The Beacon Newsletter: May - July 2021

THE BEACON NEWSLETTER MAY – JULY 2021

Dear Friends,

I hope you and yours continue to be well during these uncertain times.  At the Lighthouse, as you know, we’ve been striving to keep all of our programs running and are looking forward to hosting in-person classes soon, in addition to virtual options.  We’re excited to see life get back to normal!

Speaking of which, we had a great Spring Break camp, which our young people loved.  Planned activities ranged from craft and cooking projects to math and vocabulary activities sure to keep youth engaged and entertained while helping them to develop skills to attain maximum independence.   Spring Break was hybrid this year – offered both on Zoom and in-person with a small group in a social-distanced setting.

We also were so pleased to arrange for the Broward County Health Department to come to the Lighthouse to administer COVID vaccine shots to our blind and visually impaired clients.  Approximately 50 people were very grateful to be vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.  One client, Marion, said, “I think it’s great that you are now able to give the vaccine to those of us that need it and still can't get it … that the Lighthouse is getting involved to help their clients!”

Plus, we hosted our Eggstravaganza in a totally different way this year.  Our staff delivered beeping eggs to 35 families so more than 50 blind or visually impaired children could have an Easter egg hunt at their homes.  Of course, we also brought Easter baskets and fun activity boxes.  The kids loved it!

All of these activities are possible because of the fabulous support from Lighthouse of Broward funders and donors.  We are so grateful to everyone who helps us help you.  One person I’d like to spotlight is Sheila B., a longtime supporter of the Lighthouse.  She made a very generous donation in support of our Family STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program, which provides a wealth of STEM activities for families to do together.  We’re so thankful to Sheila for her wonderful support!

Best wishes to you for health and happiness.

Sincerely,

Jose Lopez-Masso, MBA, J.D. & Guide Dog Hartley

VP of Strategic Initiatives & Development

P.S. I know you usually receive this Beacon update from our CEO, Ellyn Drotzer.   We decided to switch up this letter so you may hear from different members of our leadership team in each edition.  We hope you enjoy our new approach!
