LHOB Summer Camp 2015

Kids Summer Camp 2015 and the Teen’s summer program were both successes once again. The Kids participated in many exciting activities this summer including drum circles, swimming, Mixed Martial Arts, arts and crafts, and more. Field trips included going to the Airport, Off The Wall Trampoline Fun Center, C.B. Smith Water Park, Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science, and  IMAX theater just to name a few. It was not all fun and games! While doing all of this, our campers gained independence by practicing braille, orientation and mobility for travel safety, and working with adaptive aids and technology.

Furthermore, clients worked with teachers and interns and completed academic work, such as reading comprehension, computer skills, science, and math. Both Kids and Teens gained and practiced activities of daily living skills by preparing their own lunches with direction from staff. Teens started off the summer by spending a week at the FAU college dorms for their college week.  This is geared toward our near graduation participants who are college bound. The experience of dorm living and taking classes complete with homework assignments is provided.  Also, during the summer program Teens had the opportunity to complete both work and volunteer experiences. These participants worked weekly at Feeding South Florida featured in this film. The Lighthouse of Broward Café returned this year with teens planning, preparing, and taking lunch orders once a week. All in all it is safe to say our Summer 2015 group had a blast!
